Jenny, A Negro vs. Williams Order of Replevin, 1800

This Order of Replevy signed by Edward Tiffin as prothonotary of the Ross County Common Pleas Court for the U.S. Territory Northwest of the Ohio River ordered the Sheriff of Ross County to take custody of three children then in the possession of Ewell Williams and return them to a woman named Jenny. The three children were: Denah, about 8 years old; Hannah, about 6 years old; and Jenny, about 4 years old. A note on the order indicates it was witnessed by Thomas Worthington as the presiding justice in the case.

Edward Tiffin was appointed the prothonotary of the Ross County Common Pleas Court for the U.S. Territory Northwest of the Ohio River by Governor Arthur St. Clair in 1798. Tiffin served as prothonotary from December 1798 - January 1803. Tiffin would later serve as the first governor of Ohio from 1803-1807 and represented Ohio in the United States Senate from 1807-1809.
